“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Matthew 16:26 KJV
Wealth , fame and success drive this world. In a fast-paced , money-making and oftentimes competitive world , it is easy for us to lose ourselves in pursuit of one or all of the aforementioned influences . It would seem that they are are very important as it is difficult to imagine life without at least one .
Through the lens of scripture however , Jesus places all these influences on the left and places our soul on the right . In comparison to our souls , wealth , success and fame shrink into insignificance. There is nothing wrong with having these things per se, but what is the benefit of gaining all these things if our souls are at stake ?
The soul is the immaterial part of man and it refers to “all that is within” a person. It is a very vital asset and it is more important than anything we can attain in this life . It is detrimental to us to gain everything else in this world and lose our souls. The duties of our souls are more important than our wealth , fame and success.
Important aspects of a soul :
1. A soul can be kept or lost.
“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Matthew 16:26 KJV
“Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;”
Deuteronomy 4:9 KJV
2. A soul can seek the Lord
“But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
Deuteronomy 4:29 KJV
3. A soul can store God’s word
“Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.”
Deuteronomy 11:18 KJV
4. A soul can serve the Lord
“And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,”
Deuteronomy 10:12 KJV
5. A soul can love the Lord
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV
6. A soul can keep God’s Law
“This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.”
Deuteronomy 26:16 KJV
7. A soul can obey God’s Law
“And shalt return unto the Lord thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;”
Deuteronomy 30:2 KJV
May we not lose our souls to this world but may be love , serve and seek God with our hearts and souls .
