Have you ever lost something and someone who was very special to you ? Did you feel like you could not make it through another day after the loss ? If you have answered ‘yes’ to the aforementioned questions then you are already blessed and there is comforter to embrace you !
Although this beatitude in Matthew 5 points to mourning in general , the context in Jesus’ Ministry is specifically for sin and estrangement from God . Yes , even though we sin and cry concerning our deepest and darkest sins , you are blessed in mourning and there is a comforter to embrace you!
Jesus mentioned the second beatitude which mentions a blessing even in mourning . It is a blessing because only those who mourn truly understand the need for comfort . This is where we understand that our sins, faults and griefs magnify our dependence on God . We established in the previous post that blessings are not only about what we have physically but realizing our dependence on God for not just somethings but in everything ! Trust that God will comfort you as you mourn ! He promises to wipe away your tears and give you the oil of joy for mourning and beauty for ashes !
“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
